Obituary ~ Robert E. Gibson

MASON CITY - Robert E. GIBSON, 92, of Mason City died Sunday (Feb. 10, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 1:30 Wednesday (Feb. 13, 2008) at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jon M. SEDA, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by members of Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, where a Scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

Robert E. GIBSON was born Sept. 12, 1915, in Cerro Gordo County, a son of Elmer and Lillian (KELLEY) GIBSON. He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Marjorie C. YARROW, on March 14, 1936, at Clear Lake.

Bob graduated from Rockwell High School, Rockwell, where he played baseball. He served in World War II, fighting in the battle of Iwo Jima.

Bob and Marjorie lived in Rockwell, where they operated their family business, GIBSON & SHERWOOD Grocery. Bob attended barber college in Des Moines. In 1955 they moved to Mason City, where Bob barbered for more than 50 years out of barber shops on North Federal Avenue. He retired in 2004 to care for his wife, Marjorie.

Bob and his wife enjoyed dancing to big bands at the Surf on Saturdays, golfing at Highland Park and later Pine Creek, trips to Las Vegas and following the Twins, Cubs and Vikings.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, VFW, AFL-CIO and the Marine Corps League.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Janece (Mike Sr.) TAGESEN, of Mason City; son-in-law, Alex SANCHEZ, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Kathy (Wayde) HENDERSON, Ronda (William) STING, Scott (Brenda) MILLER, Tony (Tammy) MILLER, Chris (Lisa) SANCHEZ and Angi (Matt) ALEXANDER; 17 great-grandchildren, Nick and Laura HENDERSON, Colin and Katie SCHORGL, Anne STING, Ashley, Zach and Wesley MILLER, Alysha, Brock, Bryant and Brittani SANCHEZ, and Dakota, Skylar and Macy ALEXANDER, Alex and Ryanna BALES; a great-great-grandson, TyAndre SANCHEZ; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy LEWIS of Mason City and Ruth CAMPBELL of Dougherty; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie; daughter, Joyce SANCHEZ; son, David GIBSON; son-in-law, Don MILLER; brother, Bill GIBSON; and sister, Dorothy INGLEDUE.
