R. Kennedy, veteran Lake fireman, dies
Clear Lake-R. B. (Bruce) Kennedy, 77, 114 N. 3rd St.,died in a Mason City hospital Thursday evening after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Arthur Krebs of the Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery at Mason City. Visitation will be at the funeral home from noon Saturday. Masonic rites will be performed by Verity Lodge 250 in the funeral home at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Russell Bruce Kennedy was born April 24, 1888, at Belle Plaine, the son of William A. and Helen (Parrish) Kennedy. The family later moved to Mason City where he attended school. He learned the plumbing trade and worked with Boyd and Fitzpatrick, Mason City.
He was married to Floy Glaser April 26, 1911, at Mason City. In 1913 he moved to Clear Lake and operated Kennedy's Stand at the corner of Main and N 3rd St. for 31 summers. He also continued with the plumbing and sheet metal business until retirement in 1953.
He was a member of the Congregational Church, Verity Lodge 250, and the oldest member of the Clear Lake Volunteer Fire Department, joining in 1918.
Survivors include his wife, Floy; one son, Dr. William Kennedy, Iowa City; one daughter, Mrs. D. L. (Kathryn) Rowson, Clear Lake; one brother, W. A. Kennedy, Des Moines; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Henry. Pallbearers will be members of the fire department. Honorary pallbearers selected are Lyle Stunkard, E. A. Colburn, R. R. Rogers, Lloyd Liesenberg, A. N. Johnson and Floyd Nesbit. Mrs. Harriet Volstad is organist.
