John Smoley dies at 69 of heart attack
Clear Lake- John A. Smoley, 69, died suddenly Friday following a heart attack in Mason City.
A retired employe of the Mason City Brick & Tile Company, he had made his home at 129 Fletcher Drive, Clear Lake.Mr. Smoley was born Jan. 10, 1895, in Carroll County, son of John and Elise (Engles) Smoley.
He attended school in Marengo. He served in the Iowa National Guard and entered the U.S. Army in April 1916, serving as a private in World War I.
Later he served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps.He was married to Mary Lillie in May 1922 at Marengo. They lived in Des Moines where he was employed by the Firestone Tire Manufacturing Co.
In 1929 he moved to Mason City and was employed by the Mason City Brick and Tile Co. He was married to Cornelia Haroldson Sept. 24, 1952, at Rock Island, Ill.
He had lived in Clear Lake since 1963, when he retired because of ill health.Surviving are his wife, Cornelia, a son Ray A. Smoley, Buffalo Center; a daughter, Mrs Gordon (Anna Mae) Beebe, Lake Mills, a stepson, Clair Haroldson, U.S. Navy, Norfolk, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Holcomb, Salina, Kan.; a brother, Glen Smoley, Newton; four sisters, Irma Long, Red Oak; Blanche Vogelar, Brookly, N.Y.; Elsie Cardy, Weyauwega, Wis., and Alice Franks, Aurora, and 12 grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ward Funeral Home in Clear Lake. Pastor Richard Ellingson of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, will officate. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel from Sunday until the time of services.
