Clarice Janet Stenby, (Mrs. Robert Wayne Stenby), the daughter of Clara and Jake Hanschu (both deceased) was born July 4, 1917 in Mason City, IA and died September 4, 2005 at the home of her daughter Victoria Warkentin in Lancaster, CA. In addition to Victoria, she is survived by her daughters Corrine Cushing and Rosalyn Trotter of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren, Sean Warkentin, Richard Warkentin, and Nicole Warkentin; her sisters Rosine Garrison of Brownsville, TX and Geradine Eads of Hobbs, NM; her brother, Kermit Hanschu of Phoenix, AZ; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held in her honor on September 17, 2005 at the Lutheran Church of the Master in Lancaster, CA, with Pastor Doug Nemitz officiating. Mrs. Stenby's ashes are buried next to her husband, Robert W. Stenby at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, MN. Mrs. Stenby had lived in the Los Angeles, CA area for over 30 years where she had served as president of two senior citizen groups. She was a wonderful pianist, sang, wrote poetry and took trips with her groups. During World War II, she had been a clerk typist with the Maritime Commission in Seattle, and in San Diego she had sung with USO groups and had been a Naval Chaplain's Assistant. She loved California and was very happy there. She was gutsy and fun and courageous and funny and will be missed by all who knew her. Donations in her honor may be made to the American Heart Association.
