GEORGE JAMES ZANIOS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - George James Zanios, 80, a former resident of Mason City (co-founder of Zanios Produce Co. with his brothers, Tom James Zanios (recently deceased) and Chris J. Zanios, now of Tarpon Springs, Fla.) passed away on Oct. 5, 1999 in Albuquerque, N.M.

George James Zanios was born Nov. 24, 1918, in Mason City. George was a resident of Albuquerque since 1955 and founded Southwest Egg Company there, which is now known as Zanios Foods in Albuquerque. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Albuquerque, where the funeral services were held on Oct. 7 and officiated by Father Mario Giannopoulos of Albuquerque. George also remained a member of the Transfiguration Orthodox Church in Mason City and was a generous supporter. George and his brothers were instrumental in the construction of the Church, at 1311 Second St. S.W., and he served on its building committee.

A 40-day memorial service will be held in his memory after the 10:30 a.m. liturgy on Sunday, Nov. 14, at the Greek Orthodox Church of Transfiguration. If friends desire, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of Transfiguration in Mason City.

George is survived by his son, Jim Zanios and wife, Patsy, of Albuquerque, and daughter, Kristie Skarman, of Newport Coast, Calif.; mother of George's children, Eva Zanios; former wife, Mary Van den Raadt; grandchildren, Jay Zanios, James Zanios and wife, Pamela, of Albuquerque, Ashley Skarman, of Newport Coast, Calif., and Suzie Whitney and husband, Doug, of Mission Viejo, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Talitha Rose Zanios and her mother, Kimberly, of Santa Fe, Nick Whitney and J.J. Whitney.

George is also survived by sisters and brother, Marie Malaktaris and Stella Pathoulas, of Mason City, Jean James, of Dearborn, Mich., Luella Rumeliote, of Bloomington, Minn., Mr. Chris Zanios, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Helen Berris, of South Lyon, Mich. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and scores of great-nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Zanios; sisters, Fala Soumas, of Riverton, Wyo., Gertrude Ringus, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Elizabeth Paras, of Mason City; and recently his brother, Tom Zanios, of Mason City.
