The Rev. George H. Weitzel, 60, of 225 S. Tennessee Place, died Tuesday (Jan. 16, 1996) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Shogren and the Rev. Harry Knisely officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or Wesley United Methodist Church in his memory.

The Rev. George H. Weitzel was born June 15, 1935, the son of George and Alice "Doris" Weitzel in Mason City.

George attended Mason City schools and enlisted in the United States Navy and served for eight years.

George married Marcia Hinrichs on Nov. 7, 1954, in Osage.

George worked for the Globe-Gazette in several positions from 1960-1974.

In 1976 George and Marcia bought Gambles Hardware Store in Nora Springs and operated it for five years.

From 1980-1982, George attended North Iowa Area Community College to prepare for the ministry with the United Methodist Church.

George's first church was in Elma where he was a part-time pastor for one year. He then went to Emerson, where he was the pastor of four churches for the Nishna Valley parishes: Emerson, Henderson, Wesley Chapel and Hastings.

In 1989 they moved to Burlington to serve the Asbury-Springgrove United Methodist Church until Aug. 1, 1995.

He loved serving the Lord as a Pastor in all the churches he served.

He was a member of the United Methodist Conference, where he held several positions. He was active in the Salvation Army in Omaha and Burlington. He served on the Board of the Glenwood State Hospital. He was active in the Nora Springs Fire Department and had an active part in organizing the Nora Springs Ambulance and EMT training.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia Weitzel of Mason City; three sons, Steve Weitzel and his wife, Cheryl, of Mason City; Mark Weitzel and his wife, Pam, of Davenport, and Paul Weitzel of San Francisco, Calif.; five grandchildren, Amanda, Amy, Joshua, Samuel and Benjamin; his parents, George and Doris Weitzel of LaFeria, Texas; one brother, Lee Weitzel and his wife, Emma, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one sister, Roberta Moore and her husband, Charles, of Storm Lake; five nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Juanita Hinrichs of Mason City; and several aunts and uncles.
