Mason City -- Catherine Ann Shovein, 80, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 1999) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill of Holy Family Catholic Church officiating. Inurnment will be at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. until time of services today at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Catherine was born on Nov. 24, 1919, in Britt, the daughter of Peter John and Anna Lichman.

She was united in marriage to James T. Shovein on April 26, 1944, in Long Beach, Calif.

Catherine was a homemaker who devoted her life to caring for her family and close friends and neighbors. She was also a long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Catherine is survived by one son, Jim Shovein and his wife, Nita, of Mason City; one daughter, Mary Beth Woodhouse, of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Jennifer Gunderson, of Brooklyn, N.Y., Sarah Hambrick and her husband, Joe, of Des Moines, Susan Yaws and her husband, Jeremy, of Palmdale, Calif., and James Jr., T.J. and Trisha Shovein, all of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Ashley Hambrick; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James on Dec. 7, 1994, and numerous brothers and sisters.
