Mrs. John Baker Services Held
Granddaughter of Illinois Pioneer Is Buried in Mason CityFuneral services for Mrs. John Baker, 73, who died at her home, 212 First street southeast, Tuesday following a lingering illness, were held at the Patterson funeral home Thursday afternoon, with the Rev. A. W. Caul, pastor of the First Baptist church, in charge of the services.
Hymns were played by Mrs. J. E. Stinchart preceding and following the services.
Margaret A. Long, daughter of Richard and Emily Long, was born at Rockford, Ill. July 2, 1861. She was the granddaughter of Cyrenius Nelson Woods, who came to Illinois on a raft down the Allegheny and Ohio rivers and was towed up the Mississippi to Illinois Town 100 years ago. In 1836 Mr. Woods moved to Rock Ford, which is now Rockford, Ill. Illinois Town has since passed out of existence.
The Long family moved to Cerro Gordo county at an early date and located on what is now the Lehigh farm. Margaret Long taught school here for a number of years until she was married to John E. Baker, May 13, 1891. They started housekeeping in the home at 212 First street southeast, where she had resided until her death. Mr. Baker died Feb. 26, 1929. Mrs. Baker became a member of the First Baptist church in December 1931.
Surviving Mrs. Baker are her daughter, Mrs. Tom Bartusek, 1019 Taylor avenue northwest, three grandchildren, Robert, Ruth and Ethel, two sisters, Mrs. L. C. Thompson, Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Daisy Lapp, Rockford, Ill., three brothers, Bert Long, Los Angeles, Cal., Charles Long, Oakland, Cal. And Edgar Long, Stockton, Cal., and has several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Roy Thompson, Joe Konvalinka, Dr. G. N. Beemer, Fred Brown, C. C. Halphide and Arthur Raymond. Burial was at Elmwood Cemetery.
