In lieu of flowers you may direct memorials to the family in care of Gayle Hakes Snow, 14 Sunset View Dr., Clear Lake, IA 50428, to any veterans association or the American Heart Association.

Bruce was born November 2, 1948, in Mason City, Iowa, the fifth child of Gail O. and Margaret M. Palmer Hakes. He was raised on a farm south of Clear Lake and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1967. He then entered the Air Force and served overseas in Vietnam and Germany as well as state side. Bruce had a quiet and gentle spirit that gave him the ability to care for many in more ways than one. He was good at fixing up things, as well as maintaining a garden. He roofed and repaired many buildings until joint damage took its toll. He often talked about bike rides that he took on many trails in different states. Bruce loved living in the mountains of Utah and Colorado. He tried to come back to his home roots but sorely missed the altitude and adventures that the mountains provided. He loved to fish and was an avid reader. At one time he managed a book store. Bruce was a jack of all trades, master-of-none type of guy, working in grocery stores, camps, Wal-Mart, Arby’s, and even for the postal service for a while in California.

Bruce is survived by brothers, Vance (Judy) Hakes of Mason City; Harry (Sue) Hakes of Clear Lake; sisters, Juanita Hakes and Bill Waddell of Antigo, Wisconsin; Gayle (Harlan) Snow of Clear Lake; Virginia (Jerry) Weiland of Hiawatha; and Kathy (Jim) Holck of Clear Lake as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, ex-wife, Phyllis Hammer Hakes; sister, Ramona Gustin; nephews, Mark Weiland, Steven and Ryan Hakes; and great-great nephew, Colby Hakes. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Bruce Alan Hakes please visit our Sympathy Store.
