Harold William Draeger was born on July 29, 1922, in Hawkeye, Iowa, to William and Amelia Dorothea (Schultz) Draeger. He was the first-born son of three born to his parents and was baptized into the Lutheran faith. Harold graduated from Mason City High School in 1941 and spent most of his life in Mason City.

Harold was inducted into the United States Army Air Force on Dec. 29, 1942, from Camp Dodge, Iowa, during World War II. After honorably and faithfully completing his designated military duties, Harold was formally discharged from the service on Nov. 17, 1945, from Randolph Field in Texas.

Although Harold never married, he enjoyed the life-long companionship of his special friend, Martha McMullen. They treasured sharing time together, especially traveling.

“Hal,” as he was fondly known as by his family and friends, was employed as a building maintenance provider for numerous years at Montgomery Wards and later worked at K-Mart in Mason City.

Hal was gifted with a great sense of artistic ability and design. He found pleasure and accomplishment in taking care of and grooming his home and property. At one time, Hal sang on the KGLO radio station and was easily entertained if a good Laurel and Hardy movie was playing.

Hal is survived by his uncle, Donald Schultz of California; his aunts, Anna Schultz of Vancouver, Wash., and Helen Schultz of Mason City; nieces, nephews and several friends.

Preceding Hal in death are his parents, William and Amelia Draeger; his two brothers, Raymond and Robert Draeger; and his special companion, Martha McMullen.
