MASON CITY --- Virgil DeVary, 80, of Mason City, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family Thursday, August 24, 2017 at Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa-Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday August 28, 2017 at Zion Evangelical & Reformed, 760 West 8th Street, Garner, with Reverend Brian Lund officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. Visitation will be held from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. on Sunday August 27, 2017 at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Those wishing to give a memorial in his memory can direct contributions to the Cancer Center, or Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Virgil DeVary was born on January 14, 1937, in Mason City, the son of Frank and Dorothy (Evans) DeVary. Virgil graduated in 1956 from Mason City High School. During his high school career he was a state wrestling contender and finished second in the state. After high school he worked various jobs throughout the years including, State Brand, and Libbey-Owens-Ford. He also would buy and sell real estate properties around the Mason City area. In 1978 he purchased a large parcel on the west side of Mason City, later becoming Willow Run Properties.

Virgil was united in marriage to Colleen Wynn and to this union three boys were born. In 1981 Virgil was united in marriage to Dorothy Ostendorf and with this marriage came two children.

Virgil was a member of the Zion Evangelical & Reformed Church, and served on the property committee for the church and served as a Mason City Councilman.

He enjoyed watching many sports, including the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa Hawkeyes. He could be seen tinkering with items that needed to be fixed, cruising the town, and having coffee with his friends at Pro's. Many will remember him as a generous man to those in need, and he never knew a stranger. Some of his greatest joys were working with his two sons for over thirty years, and spending time with his family and friends. He looked forward each year to wintering in Texas with Dorothy.

Virgil is missed by his wife, Dorothy DeVary, Garner; four children, Jeff (Louise Marroni) DeVary, Mason City, Scott (Lori) DeVary, Mason City, Carla (Mark) Boss, Cedar Falls, Wade (Crystal) Greiman, Ankeny; nine grandchildren, Lynzy, Carter, Blake, Jenna (Sean), Jordain (Tyler), Alicia, Sam, Sydnee, Lauren; two great grandchildren, Ledger, Laityn and many extended family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, infant son, Timothy DeVary; three brothers, Eldon, Duane, and Jimmy DeVary.
