MASON CITY — Walter Dow Climer Sr., 83, Mason City, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service for Walter will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Temple Baptist Church, 1211 S. Kentucky Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Ed Bard officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City with military graveside honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the church.

Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City is in charge of the arrangements.

Walter Dow Climer, Sr., was born on June 12, 1928, in Hartville, Mo., the son of Roy and Verna (Marah) Climer. Walter attended country school in Hartville, Mo., until enlisting in the U.S. Army on Sept. 15, 1950, and served his country honorably and faithfully in the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge on Aug. 25, 1952.

Walter was united in marriage to Dorothy Blaine on April 11, 1953, in Corwith, and to this union two sons were born, Walter Jr., and Lester.

Walter worked for Jacob E. Decker Co., in Mason City for 37 years in the Bacon Department until his retirement in 1993.

Walter was united in marriage to Mary Climer on Nov. 18, 1972, in Mason City.

Walter was an avid fisherman, enjoyed making all kinds of whirligigs, spending time with his grandchildren, and hunting and fishing with his two sons, and grandchildren.

Walter was an active member of the Temple Baptist Church in Mason City.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Walter “Wally” Climer, Jr. of Nora Springs, and Lester (Patty) Climer of Spencer; two step-sons, Larry Miller of Cresco, and Robert Miller of Hampton; grandchildren Kelly Climer and special friend Dell Brown of Mason City, Derrick Climer of Waterloo, Ryan (Mary) Climer of Ruthven, Tyler Climer and fiance Casey Broadhead of Spencer, and Cory (Amanda) Climer of Hartley; two great-grandchildren, Addison Thomas-Climer, and Braxton Climer; brothers, Floyd (Lisa) Climer of Springfield, Mo., and Kenneth (Patty) Climer of Seymour, Mo.; sisters Darlene Hatcher and Pauline Keith of Mansfield, Mo. and Shirley (Woody) Garrison of Battlefield, Mo., as well as many nieces, nephews, and many other extended family members and friends.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Dorothy who died on April 25, 2011; his second wife Mary who died on Oct. 19, 2007; brothers, LeRoy, Dale, Bobby and Burt Climer; and two sisters, Ilene Pearman and Nadine Klingensmith.
