Clara Barker was born May 5, 1907, the daughter of Peter Peterson and Marie Peterson (nee) Severts, on a farm near Nora Springs. She grew up with four sisters and one brother. She attended Nora Springs School where in one of her classes, she happened to sit beside her future husband. After graduating from Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa), Cedar Falls, she taught at Morehead until her marriage to Howard Barker on Dec. 31, 1931, in Nora Springs.

She was a Mason City Girl Scout executive in 1935-36. She was a charter member of the P.E.O. KX Chapter and a past president. As long as she was able, she worked in her church circles. She found beauty in the colors and shapes of nature which she transferred to her home and attire. She enjoyed cards and visiting with friends. Her companionship will be missed.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Barker, Mason City; one sister, Dorothea Todino, Ellenton, Fla.; three nephews, Dick Olson, Gary Peterson and Ronald Crabb; two nieces, Jo Ann Turner and Diane Kirwan; one brother-in-law, Dr. Donald Crabb; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Yvonne Crabb, Marie Petersen and Joan Lavery; one brother, Carl Peterson; and two nephews, Jim and Peter.
