R. M. Geary Passes Away
Funeral Tuesday at St. Patrick’s.On Saturday January 17th just as night was drawing the curtains over the day, the soul of Mr. Richard M. Geary was called before its’ Judge. Though he had been ailing for nearly two weeks his death was unexpected and came as a shock to his family and the community.
Mr Geary was born in County Limerick, Ireland, in May, 1847 and came to this country when he was seventeen years old, locating in Dubuque County, Iowa, where he worked on farms til 1870 when he went to Ackley, Iowa, where he remained until his marriage to Miss Mary Quinn, on November 3, 1881. He then moved to Parkersburg, where for twenty years resided, after which he came to Dougherty in 1911. Deceased in his short residence here has made a host of friends as was exemplified, in the large concourse of people who followed his remains to their last resting place.
He was a kind father and loving husband, a good and law abiding citizen-honest in all his dealing with his fellow men and stood firmly for what he thought was right, and scorned what he knew was wrong. He was a through Christian and a practical Roman Catholic, always ready to do his share in the cause of any religious enterprise. His reward came in his last illness when an opportunity was given him to receive all the consolation that religion can give. The end was peaceful, surrounded by his sorrowing wife and children, he breathed forth his soul to God who gave it.
He was the father of eight children all of whom are living and were present at the funeral. They are Mrs. P. Sweeny of Donnelly, Minn., Mrs. J. Keane of Clinton, Iowa, Mrs. B. Logan Michael, Joseph, Rose, Kathryn and Leo of this place. He has one sister, living, Mrs. Mullane of Ackley, Iowa.
His funeral took place from St. Patrick's Church Tuesday, January 20, Father Reilly conducting the services and paying a high tribute to the life of the deceased. May his good deeds go before him and shine as beacon lights to guide him to the shores of Eternity.
The out of town friends at the funeral were Michael, Patrick, and Richard Geary of Cascade, Iowa, nephews of the deceased; Mrs. Thos. Butler and daughter Anna, Mr. Edward Keane and Chas. Murphy of Williams, Iowa; Mrs George Wright and Mrs. Blynda Farley of Parkersburg; Mr. and Mrs. Romelfanger of Aplington, Iowa and John and Will Logan of Charles City, Iowa.
