MASON CITY -- Leon Blake, 89, of Mason City died Monday (April 9, 2018) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, Mason City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday (April 17, 2018) at Epiphany Parish - St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St. SE, Mason City with the Rev. Neil Manternach, Celebrant. Inurnment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery where military honors will be provided.

A memorial visitation will be held Monday evening (April 16, 2018) from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City; the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 pm followed by a Scriptural Wake service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday at the church. Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Leon's name to Epiphany Parish.

Leon was born on August 14, 1928 in Stacyville, the son of Albert and Mary (Schaefer) Blake. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Meyer before being drafted into the United States Army. Leon served his country during the Korean War, receiving his Honorable Discharge in December of 1952.

On April 20, 1968 Leon was united in marriage to Mary Gratias in Mason City, this union would be blessed with two children and nearly 50 years of marriage. Together they made their home near Stacyville where Leon farmed until his retirement in 1990. Following retirement the family moved to Mason City.

In his free time Leon enjoyed tending to his flower and vegetable gardens, and had a love of cooking, he was known for his specialties of goulash and soups.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife, Mary, Mason City; children Kevin and Michelle, both of Mason City; and siblings, James Blake, Riceville, Mary M. Blake, Stacyville, Sue Wageman, Austin, Minn., and Catherine (Merlin) Brown, Bridgewater, IA; and many extended relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Annabelle Retterath.
