MASON CITY -- Robert “Rick” Benson, 62, of Mason City passed away peacefully, Friday January 12, 2018 surrounded by his family after courageously battling lung cancer.

A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City, with Reverend Steve Schulz officiating. Inurnment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery, at a later date. A visitation will be held 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday January 17, 2018 at the funeral chapel.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family and a charity will be established at a later date.

Rick was born August 17, 1955 in Marshalltown, son of Duane and Dorothy (Mathiasch) Arlt, and was later adopted by Robert Benson. He attended Marshalltown High School. He sang lead vocals, played drums in various bands and the latter being Rockin 88’s. Rick was united in marriage to Sondra in 1993, where they united their families. He went on to own and operate Benson Construction and Slick Boogie Transport. He will be known for his charisma, quick wit, and many talents. He was a hard worker, and his advice to his children was that the world was there for the taking, you just have to go get it.

Rick had a passion for racing and being a part Russ Patterson’s Race Team. He enjoyed cooking, hunting and racing. He also enjoyed sharing his childhood memories and spending time with his family on the river in Greene, Iowa.

Rick is survived by his wife, Sondra Benson of Mason City; children, Jarrod (Angela Carpenter) Benson of Mason City, Amy (John) Patterson of Boone, Josh (Sadie) Evenson of Norwalk; grandchildren, Tia, Dalton, Bryce, Madelyn, Taylor, Geneva, Jersey; mother, Dorothy; step mother, Dee; two sisters, Kathy Edwards, and Becky (Terry) Angle; two brothers, Mike (Liz) Benson, and Joe (Darwin) Mcquown-Hovey; sister–in-law, Rhonda (Tom) Heintzelman; special nieces, nephews and extended family members.

Rick is preceded in death by his biological father, Duane Arlt; father, Robert Benson; father and mother–in–law, Jack (Jean) LaVarier; two brothers-in-law, Larry Heintzelman and Rick Edwards.
