Bernice May Grant was born on Dec. 7, 1945, to Christian and Gale (Olson) Mikkelson in Mason City. She graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1963. For most of her life, she lived in northern Iowa, but also spent five years in Michigan.

On Dec. 31, 1966, Bernice was united in marriage to Daniel Grant Sr. in Pontiac, Mich. To this union four children were born: Michelle, Daniel, Christina, and Jeffrey.

Bernice was a very hardworking woman. Throughout her life she worked as a nurse’s aid, dietary aid at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, and most recently worked at the YMCA’s daycare center. Bernice also watched her granddaughter Emilee and called that her “job.” She loved to take care of people, especially her children and grandchildren.

Not only was she a hardworking woman, but she was also a spontaneous woman. Her children described her as never being able to sit still. She always kept her family and friends on their toes and would catch them off guard by singing and dancing around the kitchen with a broom. Bernice’s imagination and creativity kept her young at heart, which is why she loved being around kids.

Bernice’s greatest joy in life was her grandchildren. She loved spending time with them. She also enjoyed playing cards (even though she cheated), country or gospel music, and drinking Mt. Dew and coffee.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Michelle (Raymond) Hancock of West Des Moines, Daniel Grant Jr. of Mason City, Christina (Jared) Greiman of Mason City, and Jeffrey Grant of Thornton; sisters, Caroline (Herbert) Thompson, Sue Nash, Tammy Herzog, and Frankie Knajdek; brother, Ted Mikkelson; grandchildren, Samantha Hancock, Cassandra Hoveland, Savanna Grant, Brittnee Crom, Joshua Greiman, McKenna Greiman, and Emilee Greiman; and several nieces and nephews.

Those who preceded her in death include her husband, Daniel Grant Sr.; parents, Christian and Gail Olson; sisters, Garlene Kitner and Donna Kaduce; and many other loved ones.
