February 15, 1998MASON CITY — Irene Gazes, 87, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Feb. 10, 1998) at the Rehabilitation Hospital of Nevada, Reno.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, 1311 Second St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, with a Trisagion service beginning at 7 p.m.
Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.
Irene Gazes was born July 10, 1910, in Athens, Greece, the daughter of Demitrios and Kallopie Kantaris. She came to the United States from Greece in 1914, at the age of 4. She married Louis Sam Gazes on April 2, 1929, in Albert Lea, Minn. Irene was a homemaker and owned and operated a restaurant in Oakland, Calif., for a few years. She was a member of the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, Mason City, where she donated much of her time preparing authentic Greek cuisine.
Survivors include one son, Sam Louis Gazes of San Leandro, Calif.; four sisters, Christina Klein and Stella Markos, both of Mason City, Mary Traintasillou of Detroit, Mich., and Betty Armoskos of Alameda, Calif.; one brother, Gus Kantaris of Mason City; six grandchildren, Marie Eynon and Irene Eynon, both of Detroit, Mich., George Rezabek of Texas, Eleni Lou Gazes and Costadena Irene Gazes of California and Louis Sam Gazes, her husband’s namesake, of Reno, Nev.; three great-grandchildren, Amber Irene Gazes of California and Sam Louis Gazes and Rachel Renee Gazes of Reno, Nev.; and many other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Louis Sam Gazes; five children, Amelia Rezabek, Kallopie Andary, Eleni Gazes and Georgia and Theodora Gazes; two brothers, Nick and George Kantaris; and four sisters, Annie Apostolou, Bessie Hall, Soulie Kantaris and Helen Sponduris.
