MASON CITY -- Howard "Gene" Query, 69, died Sunday (July 7, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., with the Rev. David Shogren of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Following services, the body will be cremated. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel.

Howard was born to Howard H. and Vivian Query on May 24, 1927, in Mason City. He was raised in Mason City along with one brother and two sisters. He was a graduate of Mason City High School.

Howard served in both World War II and the Korean War. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, commissioned on the battleship U.S.S. Grimes from 1944 to 1946 and served in the Air Force from 1949 to 1953, where he was stationed at the Burtonwood Air Force Base, Warrington, England. He was honorably discharged in 1953 at the rank of staff sergeant.

While stationed in England, he met Lilian Bates and was married May 31, 1952, in Swinton, England. Upon his discharge from the Air Force, he, wife, and son, Howard, relocated to Mason City.

Howard worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in 1990. He was later employed at Artz and Merrit Sporting Goods Store from 1991 to 1995.

During his off hours, he enjoyed sporting events (boxing), fishing, coffee at Shill's Maid-Rite, radio electronics and most recently, avid exploration of the Internet.

Aside from his hobbies and other varied interests, his greatest enjoyment was that of his six grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lilian (Bates) Query of Mason City; son, Howard Query and his wife, Mary Lou, of Mason City; daughter, Julie Broome and her husband, Wayne, of Mason City; two sisters, Gwen Miller and husband, Francis, of Mason City, and Dixie Shunkwiler and her husband, Dean, of Mason City; foster brother, Roger Cahalan of Mason City; brother-in-law, John "Peter" Bates of Swinton, Manchester, England; and grandchildren, Jason Query of Mason City; Justin Query of Iowa City; Jessica Query of Ames; Tammy Christensen and her husband, Andy, of Mason City; Jamie Broome of Mason City and Cassie Jo Broome of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard H. Query (1972); his mother, Vivian (1970); and his brother, Bill (1993).

Memorials may be given to the Howard "Gene" Query Memorial Fund.
