December 13, 2000MASON CITY -- Donald E. "The Frog" Herzog, 71, of 819 S. Van Buren Ave., died Sunday Dec. 10, 2000, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at noon today at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.
Donald was born Nov. 21, 1929, in Mason City, the son of Walter and Millie (Redmanovich) Herzog. He received his education from St. Joseph Catholic School where he was active in baseball and basketball. He lived most of his life on Powder Puff Street, the melting pot of Mason City.
Donald played softball with the Junior Legion Team - the Decker Brothers of Mason City. He was known for his hoping around 2nd base, earning the nickname "Frog." Donald enjoyed boxing and watching the Mohawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes play basketball.
Donald had such a passion for the Minnesota Vikings that he would bet Lloyd Knapp one dollar that the Vikings would take it home. For the first two games "The Frog" won. Being so proud of his Vikings he framed those two dollars and hung them on the wall, reminding Lloyd who was the best team. For the next several years, Lloyd won but those two dollars still remain on the wall.
His heart was devoted to his family and friends and he treasured all the laughs they shared and always tried to be at least a half a step ahead.
His memories are left to be cherished by a special friend, Nancy Knapp of Mason City; one daughter, Kathy and her husband, Mike Manning, of St. Paul, Minn.; seven special children; one brother, Richard Herzog of Mason City; 13 special grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents and his ex-wife.
