Jim was born on April 10, 1927, in Floyd County, Iowa. His family later moved to Swaledale, where he attended school. He helped his dad farm, along with other farmers in the area. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the United States Army. He served 6 months of his service in Japan as a military policeman. After one year he was honorably discharged with a World War II Victory Medal and an Army Occupation Medal.

On Feb. 20, 1949, Jim married Betty Mae Rowe in Thornton. They lived in the Swaledale area until 1958 and then moved to Clear Lake where he farmed and purchased his own semi-truck and hauled livestock for Bonner Trucking. They moved back to the Swaledale area in 1972 where he continued to farm and drive truck for Builder's Supply. In 1985, they moved back to Clear Lake where he drove truck for Chuck Kuhlemeier, and continued to drive after his retirement.

Jim led a life full of fulfillment! No matter where he went, he was bound to run into someone he knew. He loved going on drives, checking on the fields and enjoying the crisp autumn air. He also liked hanging out with the guys drinking coffee and socializing, or hanging out with friends at the VFW while putting back a few drinks, playing the card game, "Sh-t on your neighbor." He cherished the 47 years he had with his wife, Betty. They were very active in the VFW, enjoyed taking trips with friends, and loved having family over for Sunday dinners and special occasions.

Jim's last few years of life were spent living at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City where he made some very special friends and enjoyed having fun with the employees. Although Jim loved all his children and grandchildren, he had a special bond with Morgan. Morgan took good care of Grampy, she loved making him laugh. He will be missed by all.

He is survived by his children, Marilyn Kay Howe, Linda Brood, Sandy Brood, Pam Huff, Sherry (Danny) Kingston, and Jamie Eliason-Brood; two sisters, two brothers; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; one sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Jacob; wife, Betty; and sons, Jack and John.
