Lois G. (Estal) Cheney, 98, of Nora Springs died Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at the Christian Church, 102 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Glen Bandel officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Lois G. (Estal) Cheney was born Oct. 16, 1915, in Green Mountain, the daughter of William G. Estal and Ida B. (Tuffree) Estal. She moved with her parents and siblings to O’Brien County in western Iowa. She attended country school for a couple of years. In 1921 she moved with her parents to the north of Nora Springs where she completed country school and attended Nora springs High School.

She became a member of the Christian Church when she was 12 and over the years was a choir leader, class teacher and Sunday school superintendent.

Lois met her future husband, Eugene J.E. Cheney, in the summer of 1942, and they were married at her parents’ home in April 1945. She worked at Demo’s Café and the Dutch Inn until she was married. After she was married she was employed at Bellow’s Bakery for 11 years and Artz Dress Shop for three years. During her marriage she was involved helping her husband, who was a professional photographer.

Lois was a gifted musician. She taught herself how to play the organ and piano. She sung at weddings and funerals. She started young when she was 5 at programs and over the radio for one of them. She was also a good artist, creating beautiful paintings.

Lois is survived by nieces and nephews, Gloria (Tommy) Thomas (Milton), Larry (LaDonna) Estal, James (Tracey) Estal, Jon (Jill) Estal and Sondra (Steve) Jaynes; as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eugene J.E. Cheney; brothers, Eugene Estal, Richard Estal, and Loren Estal; nephews, Aubrey Estal, Gerald Estal, Perry Estal and Danny Estal.
