Marshall was born on May 23, 1932 in Osage, IA to Harry and Maude (Cobey) Nicholson. He attended school in Osage. On April 24, 1954 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Jeanette. The couple adopted two children; daughter Judeane and son Patrick. Marshall and his family resided in Plymouth, IA while their children were growing up then later moved to Mason City in 1978.

For almost 40 years Marshall worked at Armour in multiple positions. Then during his retirement, he worked maintenance at the Autumn Park Apartments in Mason City for nearly 20 years. In his free time he enjoyed car rides with his wife and going to the casino together. Marshall was known for always having pennies. He never went without buying pull tabs, lottery tickets and his favorite can of chew. Although he was a quiet and reserved person, the love he had for his wife Jeanette was evident and substantial.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of almost 62 years, Jeanette Nicholson; daughter, Judeane (Dave Coburn) Nicholson of Mason City; son, Patrick Nicholson of Mason City; grandchildren: Brandon (Lexi) Anderson of St. Ansgar, Christopher Nicholson of Mason City and Andy (Mary) Bratrud of Mason City; great-grandson, Gannon Anderson of Mason City and a special niece Kay Bessman of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Maude Nicholson and siblings: Gladys, Harry, Lester, Harold, Stanley and Lewis.
