Estelle "Stella" Tierney, 91, of Mason City, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (March 15, 2014) at Epiphany Parish-St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. John Gossman as celebrant.

Inurnment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to Stella's Mass at the church on Saturday.

She was born April 25, 1922, to Leo and Elizabeth “Bessie” Olson in Waukon. She met the love of her life, Lyle Tierney, at a dance at Luther College. She married him on Jan. 12, 1943. He passed away 25 years later.

Estelle, fondly known as Nanny, is survived by her son, Ron Tierney, and daughter, Kay Kent, five grandchildren, Todd, Traci, Deborah, Terri and Chuck and 10 great-grandchildren, Joshua, Justin, Elizabeth, Connor, Noah, Veronica, Matthew, Jacob, Teddy, and Anna.

She enjoyed living her entire life in Iowa and called Mason City home for close to 60 years. She was fond of teaching and her very first job was a school teacher in Decorah. Besides teaching, she loved to dance and enjoyed fishing in Canada as well. Throughout her life, she was an avid reader and liked completing crossword puzzles. Her favorite season was spring — she loved the sight and smell of flowers blooming. Her zest for life, independence, passion, and love for her family including her two beloved cats, Charlie and Swishy, will be greatly missed but we know she is eternally happy now dancing with her husband, Lyle.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Heritage Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mason City for their excellent care and support for Nanny over the last several years. In addition, they thank Stephanie Duesenberg, for her caring and kindness in Nanny’s last days.
