Mabel Louise VanHecke was born on Dec. 18, 1921, in Mason City, the only child of Kamiel “Mel” and Mary (VerHelst) VanHecke. She was raised on the family farm just outside of St. Ansgar where she could be found working right alongside her father. Mabel always had an extremely hard work ethic and was always available to help her father with whatever needed to be done.

Following the death of her mother, Mabel and her father moved to Mason City where she began working as a housekeeper for various families. Mabel was a meticulous housekeeper and always went out of her way to do her very best for the families and regarded them as her own.

In her free time Mabel was an avid reader, enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, and loved going out to the movies. She loved all children and was delighted at the opportunity to babysit whenever possible. Mabel also loved animals and had a special place in her heart for her pets.

Those grateful in sharing in her life are her cousins, Bill VerHelst, Lester VerHelst, Leland VerHelst, Gail Langlitz, Dorothy Arends, and Doris Lubbert; as well as many extended family members and her dear friends.

Mabel is preceded in death by her parents.
