Thomas V. Caberea, 86, of Mason City, died Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday Oct. 17, 2014, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City. Interment will follow at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, where a rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be made in care of the family and online condolences may be left at www.fullertonfh.com .

Thomas was born on March 24, 1928, in Mason City to Thomas and Marina Cabrera. He joined the Navy in 1946 and served aboard the USS Chicago in Occupation of Japan following the end of World War II. Upon returning home from the service in 1948, he went to work at Decker's, and then worked at Lehigh Cement Co. where he worked for 42 years before retiring in 1990. In 1991, he began working for the North Iowa Vocational Services, where he worked until he was just shy of 82 years old. While it goes without saying, he was very proud of his work ethic.

Thomas enjoyed coaching his sons and grandsons Little League teams. In his younger years, he loved hunting, fishing, trapping, and riding his Harley. In later years, he enjoyed watching boxing and westerns.

He was past commander of VFW Post 733 and was very proud of having gone through all the chairs from chaplain to commander. He was also past historian of the USS Chicago Reunion Committee and he and Shirley enjoyed going to the ship reunions on every coast. He was a member of the Mason City Memorial Association and was very proud to be a veteran.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley, two daughters, Hasmeg a.k.a.Teresa Haroutunian and Margaret Jamaica, Mason City, three sons, Tom (Tracy), West Des Moines, Iowa, Dimitri (Charlotte), Phoenix, Arizona, Dominic (Lindsay), Forest City, Iowa, two special grandchildren whom lived with him at the time of his death, Antonio and Joanna Caberea, and grandchildren Jammy Klinner, Sabrina Choi, Frankie Jamaica, Eric Jamaica, Chantal Jamaica, Avo Haroutunian, Vasken Haroutunian, Lisa Haroutunian, Israel Cabrera, Romel Cabrera, Jael (Josh) Kuster, and 16 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a brother, Frank (Mary) Castino of Mason City, and two favorite brothers-in-law, Dean Rankin, and Larry Nicholson of Knoxville, Iowa. Also surviving him are his beloved "girls," their Yorkies that gave him much enjoyment in his later years, Cali and Gypsi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Thomas in infancy, another son, Salvador, as well as sisters, Mary, Jenny, and Lupe, and brothers, Mike and Andy.
