August 01, 2012TAOS, N.M. — James Florian Brandau, Lt.Cmdr. USN Ret., died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 22, 2012, in Taos, N.M.
He was born Feb.15, 1933, in the same Iowa farmhouse his father was born in. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1950 and attended the University of Iowa. He joined the Navy to see the oceans and then took to the skies. He flew everything from jets to helicopters to hot air balloons. One thousand of his flying hours were in Antarctica. He ran the bulls in Pamplona, skied every chance he got and at the age of 79, passed away hiking Wheeler Peak, New Mexico’s highest mountain, in his beloved Taos. If you knew him, you know what a good, strange and exceptional man he was. If you didn’t know him, you missed something great.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Molly Grady; his daughter Peggie Brandau of Taos, and daughters Maeve and Caitlin Brandau of Albuquerque; sisters Beverly Brandau of Timonium, Md.; Karen Trujillo and brother-in-law Robert Trujillo of Denver, Colo.; as well as many much loved nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister Marilyn Tubbesing and brother-in-law Donald Tubbesing, both of Mason City.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held Aug. 4, at 4 p.m. at the First Unitarian Church of Albuquerque, N.M.
To honor Jim, the family requests you do something good for Nature and for children.
Arrangements by Riverside Funeral Home in Albuquerque, N.M.
