James L. Ward, 84, Mason City, died Saturday, October 18, 2014, at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Hwy 18 West, Mason City, with Pastor Ed Bard, Hospice Chaplin, officiating.

Military honors will also be conducted by members of Mason City Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guard.

James Lowell Ward was born on November 10, 1929, in Des Moines, the son of Buck and Ruby (Quandt) Ward. Jim was inducted into the Army on December 5, 1946, at Ft. Crook, Nebraska, and served his country honorably and faithfully during World War II, until his honorable discharge on May 4, 1950. Jim worked at Deckers/Armour Meat Packing Company in Mason City. Later in Jim’s life he and wife Lyla moved to Colorado and retiring as a Ranch Manager.

Jim was united in marriage to Wanita (Wodarcak) Ward in 1949, and to this marriage six children were born.

Douglas (JoDee) Ward of Mason City, Marcia (Roland) Rowson of Ring Gold, Texas, Pamela James and special friend Jamie Brown of Rock Island, ILL, Mary Ellen (Donald) Sprung of Sheffield and Steven (Cindy) Ward of Cody, Wyoming; his brother, Charles “Chuck” Ward of Mason City; 17 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews, other extended family members and friends.

James was preceded in death by his parents; and one infant daughter, Janet; sister, Dorothy Langhoff, and a brother, Junior Ward.

Jim was united in marriage to Lyla Fiscus on August 29, 1973, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Lyla’s children from a previous marriage are Lisa (Denny) True, Janeen Quandt and partner (Laurie Riley) of Iowa City, Don (Liz) Quandt, Brighton, Colorado; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Jim and Lyla lived at Osage, Iowa, until 1983, when they moved to Colorado. Jim managed a ranch near Carbondale, Colorado, until health problems brought them back to Iowa. They settled again near Osage from 2002 to 2010, then moved to Grant Village in Mason City.

Jim loved the mountains of Colorado riding horses, watching western movies, Louis La’Mour books, hunting, fishing and eating, especially desserts, ice cream was his favorite.

Jim was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Hunter True.
