Harold Petersen, 81, of Mason City, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997 at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center East Campus, Mason City.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Daird Korth officiating. Interment was in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Military honors were held by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. The family suggests memorials to the Harold Peterson memorial fund.

Harold was born on the family farm in rural Thornton, Iowa, the son of Marinus and Freda (Nielsen) Petersen on July 11, 1915. He attended rural school in Thornton.

Harold farmed with his father until 1942, then entered the Army during World War II and served in the European Pacific Theater. Following the service he came back to the family farm.

Harold married Gladys Jean Lynch and they farmed southeast of Rockwell, Iowa, for a number of years. Harold moved to Marshalltown, Iowa in 1965 and worked for Fisher Controls until his retirement in 1978. He then moved to the Sheffield, Iowa area and later to his present home in Mason City.

He enjoyed keeping in contact with his army buddies, doing wood working crafts, helping his friends and especially his grandchildren. He was a life member of the VFW Post #733, Mason City.

He is survived by his son, Chris Petersen and his wife, Kristi, Clear Lake; three sisters, Sylvia Pross and her husband, William D., Diamond Head, Miss., Alma Laudner and her husband, W.C. Dugan, Mason City, and Mrs. Roland (Norma) Salier, Nora Springs, Iowa; one brother, Elmer Petersen, Proctor, Minn.; two grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew Petersen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean; one brother; and a sister.

Honorary pallbearers were Dain Salier, Ronnie Pross, Wayne Janssen, Dan Flugge, Kurt Stowe.

Pallbearers were Bill Salier, Greg Salier, Matthew Petersen, Al Holm and Duane Fibelstad.
