On July 28, 1952, Larry was honorably discharged after serving at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.

After returning from the service he attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. In Nov. of 1954 Larry met Ann Partello and after a whirlwind courtship they married on March 6, 1955, and took up residence in Humboldt, Iowa, where Larry worked as a printer for the Humboldt Independent newspaper.
