Virginia Ann Schmitz, 84, Clear Lake, died Saturday, June 7, 2014, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A funeral service for Virginia will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Monsignor Joseph Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.

Virginia Ann (May) Schmitz was born on August 29, 1929, in Milwaukee, Wis., the daughter of Casper and Clara (Matz) May. Virginia attended school in Milwaukee, and graduated from Milwaukee High School.

After her graduation, Virginia worked for Honeywell Corporation in Milwaukee until her marriage to Vincent Schmitz on February 16, 1952, in Milwaukee, and to this marriage three children were born, Robert, Linda, and Douglas. Vincent preceded her in death in December 1981. Virginia also worked at a funeral home in Milwaukee. For many years Virginia helped her husband in his business, Schmitz Manufacturing in Clear Lake.

Virginia loved and enjoyed being a wife, mother and grandmother, as well as cooking, baking, gardening, roller skating, cats, the singer Daniel O’Donnell, Lawrence Welk, social gathering with family and friends, avid Green Bay Packers fan, going out to eat, and Bingo.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert Schmitz of Swaledale and special friend Sheila Beal of Waterloo, Linda Halsne of Clear Lake, and Doug (Janet) Schmitz of Clear Lake; her grandchildren, Keith (Nellie) Schmitz, Brandon (Carrie) Halsne, Dani Schmitz, and Ryan Schmitz; a great-granddaughter soon to be born; several nieces, nephews, a special friend, Dorothy “Dot” Gerdes of Clear Lake; and Connie Andersen of Clear Lake; other extended family members and friends.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vincent; brothers and sisters, twin brother Virgil May, Dottie Stricker, Leroy May, Irene Barback, and Evelyn Kass; and a grandson, Brian Halsne.
