Darrell Kolb, 89, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday (March 2, 2016) at Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living Center, Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday (March 7, 2016) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE., Mason City, with Reverend Robert Harting officiating. Military honors will be by the Mason City Veterans Affairs. Burial will be Tuesday (March 8, 2016) at 1:00 p.m. in Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday (March 6, 2016) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE., Mason City.

Memorial contributions will be directed to Betty Kolb and an organization will be chosen at a later date.

Darrell Kolb was born July 22, 1926, son of John and Emma (Petersen) Kolb, third of the four sons. Darrell was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Latimer. He graduated from Latimer High School, Class of 1943. Darrell joined the U.S. Army 1944 and served during WWII in the Philippines and Korea. Darrell was honorably discharged as a sergeant in 1946. Darrell felt he didn’t want to be acknowledged for his service during WWII because so many other veterans gave their all and sacrificed their lives.

Darrell was united in marriage to Betty (Mikkelsen) September 14, 1947 at St. James Lutheran Church, Mason City and to this union two children were born, Deborah and Gregory. He was a proprietor of Kolb’s Hardware in Thornton for 42 years. He served as a volunteer fire fighter for Thornton for many years.

Darrell was a member of Richland Lutheran Church, Lions Club and American Legion in Thornton.

Darrell was an avid sportsman, hunting, fishing, golfing with family and friends. He enjoyed watching basketball and football the majority of his life, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. Darrell and Betty spent many years on their back deck watching the golfers, wild life and entertaining their family and friends.

Darrell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Kolb, of Mason City; two children, Deborah (Thomas) Jackson, of Mason City, and Gregory Kolb, of Thornton; six grandchildren, Bridget (Caver) Matheidas, of Texas, Danielle (Jim Shipley) Naumann, of Mason City, Juliet (Jason) O’Donnell, of Urbandale, Wambli Valandra, of Alaska, Kayla and Jonah Kolb, of Indianola; four great grandchildren, Nicholas and Morgan Naumann, Kolson and Kennedi O’Donnell; two brothers, Vincent (Florice) Kolb and Harlyn (Marilyn) Kolb; brother in law, Leland (Corrine) Mikkelsen; sister in law, Gerda Hartwell and many nieces and nephews.

Darrell is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kenneth Kolb.
