Emil Nicholas Everhart, 89, of the IOOF Home, Mason City, died Sunday (Nov 21, 1999) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Monday at the funeral chapel and again after 9:00 am Tuesday until service time.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. James Lutheran Church.

Emil was born March 28, 1910, on a farm southeast of Hanford, one of 11 children of William and Dora (Stoltenberg) Everhart. When he was 4 years old they moved to a farm south of Mason City on the Burchinal road. Emil attended Bath Township School and in 1937 he left home to help on farms around Northwood, Rock Falls and Mason City.

He entered the U.S. Army in September 1942 and honorably served his country for three years. During his first year he trained at three different camps, then served over seas in Northern Ireland. He served with the 8th division, 13th infantry and was second gunner of an 81mm mortar gun. He served in three major battles in northern France, Normandy and the Rhineland, serving also in Luxembourg and Belgium. He received injuries just before crossing the Rhine River into Germany and spent time in a hospital near London before being sent to Glennian General Hospital in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, to finish his recovery.

He was discharged in October 1945 with a Purple Heart, combat infantryman's badge, Good Conduct Medal and three battle stars in his ETO for campaigns in France.

He moved to California after the war and was united in marriage to Bertha Smith, a Plymouth resident and shipyard worker, on January 12, 1945, in San Francisco. They made their home for 40 years in Richmond, California, until her death. Emil remained there for an additional eight years. He was employed in government housing and then became a truck driver for the City of Richmond in public works until he retired in 1975. He then took it easy and passed the time by going to the Senior Citizens Center, playing pool and going on bus trips to Reno and other places. He belonged to Richmond Post 10 of the American Legion for more than 36 years and Grace Lutheran Church. In 1994 he moved back to Mason City to be closer to his relatives. He made his home at the IOOF since then.

Survivors include his daughter-in-law Barbara Graves, Mason City; two sisters, Hattie Stevens, Clear Lake and Evelyn Sandy and her husband Jim, San Marcos, California; and more than 30 nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife in December 1986, five brothers, three sisters and one step-son, Don Graves.
