MASON CITY | Vivian R. Balek, 89, of Mason City died Friday (September 29, 2017) at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit, Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (October 3, 2017) at the Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th St SE, Mason City, with Reverend Austin Wilker officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm, with a Scriptural Wake Service at 6:30 p.m., on Monday (October 2, 2017) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St. NE, Mason City.

Vivian R. Balek was born on June 6, 1928 in Rural Worth County to Fred H. and Ruth L. (Godfrey) Logeman the second of three children. She attended Plymouth High School and graduated in 1945.

Vivian worked for the telephone company for three years. She married James Edward Balek on September 30, 1949 at St. Joseph Church in Mason City and to this union four children were born, Ron, Deanna, Fred, and Ted. After she was married and the kids were old enough to start school, she worked in the school cafeteria at St. Joseph school and when the kids had progressed to high school she changed jobs and did office cleaning.

She was a member of Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Jude Circle, and volunteered at Central Catholic rocking the babies. Vivian enjoyed needlework, crochet, knitting, creating plastic canvas decorations, and spending time with her family.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Ron (Sheila) Balek, Manly, Deanna (Ed) Harris, Rockford, and Ted Balek, Mt. Pleasant, and daughter-in-law Donita Balek, Iowa City; four grandchildren, Jamie Balek, Amy Balek, Matt Balek and Jessica Balek; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Joey Balek; brother-in-law, Bob Balek, Mason City; and a special niece, Karen Fedderson, Charles City.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James E. Balek, her son, Fred Balek, a brother, Wesley Logeman, and a sister, Vera Waychus.
