Donald A. Stokke, 77, of Ankeny, formerly of Clear Lake, died from complications of a stroke Tuesday (Sept. 15, 2009) at Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 S.E. Sharon Drive in Ankeny. Burial will be in Ankeny Memorial Gardens at a later date after cremation.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Donald was born on Sept. 14, 1932, in rural Fertile, the son of Albion and Dora (Mastre) Stokke. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1950 and joined the U.S. Navy in August of 1952, serving in the Far East during the Korean War. After leaving the Navy, Don attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, graduating in 1958.
Don was united in marriage to Lavonne (Pralle) Stokke on Sept. 10, 1960. A son, Greg, was born on July 18, 1961. Don and Lavonne made their home in Clear Lake until 1971, when they moved to Ankeny.
Don was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1971 and was an active member, serving as treasurer, Sunday school teacher and usher for a number of years. He was employed by Farmers Hybrids, E.M. Duesenberg, Inc. for 30 years, Sears Credit Union, Lint Van Lines and in recent years delivered medicine for Medicap Pharmacy.
Don is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lavonne of Ankeny; son, Greg (Julie) and grandson, Grant, of Ankeny; a sister, Mavis Carney of O’Fallon, Mo.; sister-in-law, Dolores Pralle, of Ankeny; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ruth.
Don liked to go fishing with his grandson, watch TV and work on the computer. He enjoyed giving out candy bars during his travels around town, making balloon animals for kids of all ages and writing a humorous newsletter for his church family called the Porkogram.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to his church.
