“Rockwell, Dec. 23.—Joseph L. Lakin, 81, died at his home here this morning following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Lakin was one of the early settlers in Story county following the Civil war and settled near Rockwell in 1899.
He was born in 1848 at Whitby, Canada, but moved at an early age with his parents to St. Charles, Ill. Here the family was living at the outbreak of the Civil war and Mr. Lakin immediately enlisted in Company C, One Hundred and Forty-First Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He served with the same company until the close of the war when he was discharged in Chicago. He was a member of the Atlanta post G. A. R.
Mr. Lakin and Miss Annie Van Dusen were married at Sycamore, Ill., in 1873. The couple celebrated the fifty-sixth anniversary of their wedding on Sept. 16 this fall.
Funeral services will be held in the Congregational church in Rockwell at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon. Burial will be made in the Rockwell cemetery.” (Mason City Globe Gazette, Dec. 23, 1929, pg 11)
