Mason City - Kathleen "Kathy" Marie Frank 59 died October 1, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral service will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, October 4, 2008, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City, with Reverend Barbara McCaulley officiating. Kathy's family has requested casual attire. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be held Friday from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M. at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street N.E. Mason City.

Memorials may be directed to the Kathleen M. Frank Memorial Fund.

Kathleen Marie Adams was born August 2, 1949, in Mason City, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Grein) Adams. She attended Mason City and North Central Schools. She graduated from Hamilton's Business College. Kathy owned and operated the Power Plant Bar and Grill. She was a medical secretary at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa in the Radiology Department.

Kathy's greatest love was spending time with her family and friends; especially with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Plymouth United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son Jeff (Danielle) Sestina, Mason City; grandchildren Alyssa and Alexis Sestina, Reynoldsburg, OH, and Samuel Sestina and Brooke Irwin, Mason City; brother, David (Alice Cobb) Adams, Mason City, sister, Denise (Bryan) Eberhardt, Mason City, nieces, Annie Crawford and her husband Adam Robinson, St. Paul, MN, Sarah (Greg) Hogan and their daughters Olivia and Grace, New Richmond, WI, nephew, Samuel Crawford, Chicago, Ill; along with numerous aunts, cousins, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, daughter Lori Lynn, and brother Charles Lord.

COMMUNITY ACTIVIST FRANK DIES AT 59

MASON CITY — Kathy Frank, a longtime activist in Mason City who advocated for everything from clean air to grandparents' rights, died Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. She was 59.

Frank, who for many years operated the Power Plant restaurant, ran unsuccessfully for mayor and for the City Council and was a frequent speaker at the public forum at council meetings.

"Kathy Frank loved Mason City and she wore it on her sleeve," said former Mayor Bill Schickel, who presided at many of the meetings where Frank aired her concerns.

"She was a fighter for many causes and for the north end in particular. She was passionate about wanting to make Mason City a better place to live."

Councilman Max Weaver said, "Kathy always meant well. She and I could kind of relate to each other because we both would have strong views on issues but maybe express them in a way where they weren't always interpreted the way we wanted them to be.

"She dealt with some heavy issues in both her personal and professional life and I always respected her for that."

Frank was an advocate for clean air in the north end and was instrumental in getting the Department of Natural Resources to start monitoring emissions of cement dust.

She was also active in promoting anti-drug programs and talked openly about having family members who were drug users.

More recently, she advocated for the rights of grandparents to be able to see their grandchildren in situations where the grandchildren's parents had divorced.

Frank was born in Mason City where she lived most of her life. She ran for City Council in 1995 and for mayor in 1997.

As a mayoral candidate, she admitted to not having any government experience. But she said her years of operating the Power Plant gave her a unique background because of the broad range of people she met.

"I would say I talk to a much larger cross section of people than any of the other candidates," she said in a Globe Gazette interview.

She also favored better decorum at council meetings. "If you act like a child, you get a time-out," she said.

Services are pending, under the direction of Hogan-Bremer.
