OTTUMWA - Larry D. Fjelstul, 52, of 1505 N. Jefferson, Ottumwa, died of cancer at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday (April 9, 2002) at University Hospitals in Iowa City.

He was born August 6, 1949, in Decorah, to Vernon and Frances Halverson Fjelstul. He married Barbara Hepp Wettestad on June 20, 1982, in Waterloo.

A graduate of Maquoketa Valley High School, he earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa and his MBA degree from St. Ambrose University. He was employed by John Deere for 23 years as a manufacturing engineer, both in Waterloo and Ottumwa.

He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa. Larry loved hunting, fishing and golfing. He also found great joy in spending time with is family.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Paul and wife, Lorrie, of Council Bluffs, and Phillip of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Lara, of Ankeny; two grandchildren, Hannah and Alan; three brothers, Leslie of Phoenix, Ariz., David of Delhi, Iowa, and Jeffrey of Coloma, Mich.; 2 sisters, Kathy Craig of Mesa, Ariz., and Becky Sundermeyer of Mason City; and his dog, Jesse.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; a brother-in-law, Merle Sundermeyer; his grandparents and aunts and uncles.

A funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa with Rev. John Spiegel officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Elmwood- St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will begin at noon today at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Bill Perry, Paul Rabbass, Gary Moore, Beckham Miller, John Zelhart, John Demmer, Joe Hepp, Gayle Craig, Ken Carlson and Doug Nestor. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike, Randy and Jack Halverson, Dennis and Darrell Serslund, Mark Pavlovec, Scott Fjelstul, Chad and Eric Sundermeyer, Adam Fjelstul, Joshua and Bryce Craig, Joe and Tim Crawford and Marvin Rolins.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Patrick Catholic Church.
