MASON CITY - Paul Edward Fitzgerald, Jr., 73, of 27 26th Street S.W., Mason City, died Sunday (February 16, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street S.E., Mason City, with the Reverend Chris Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association of Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday with a public scripture wake service at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Ed Fitzgerald was born on January 8, 1930, in Rockwell, Iowa, the son of Paul Edward Fitzgerald, Sr., and Elizabeth (Gaffney) Ed attended and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1947. After completing his schooling, he worked as a carpenter with his dad in the Mason City area. He was inducted into the United States Air force in 1951, serving during the Korean conflict until his honorable discharge in 1954.

He was united in marriage to Connie Swadinsky on August 9, 1952, in Hanna City, Ill. After his honorable discharge he returned to Mason City and worked as a union carpenter until his retirement.

He was later united in marriage to Martha "Marty" Fike on June 1, 1981, in Rochester, Minnesota. She preceded him in death on April 28, 1997.

Ed was an avid sports fan, enjoyed bowling, golf, was instrumental in the implementation of the Knights of Columbus youth baseball program and he enjoyed visiting with his many friends, but his great love and enjoyment was watching his grandchildren play sports.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mason City, Rockwell American Legion, and the local carpenters union local chapter 106 and 1313.

Left to cherish his memory are his children; Paul Fitzgerald and his wife, Dianne, of Rogers, Minn., Patti Petersen and her husband, Gary, of Rockwell, Pam Osgood and her husband Dan of Mason City, Mike Fitzgerald of Chicago, Ill,, and Jim Fitzgerald of Des Moines; grandchildren, Matt Fitzgerald, Caroline Monson and Robert Monson, Robert Fitzgerald, Sean Fitzgerald, Katie Fitzgerald, Grant Petersen, Kari Petersen, Billy Petersen, Katie Osgood, Ryan Osgood, Shannon Fitzgerald, Patrick Fitzgerald, Megan Fitzgerald and Molly Fitzgerald; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Fitzgerald, Leif Monson, and Victoria "Tori" Monson; a sister, Mary Lenore Gogg of Charles City; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Powell of Mason City, and Delores Fike and Sharon Jefferies and her husband Harvey both of Rudd; several nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife Marty.

Ed will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and many friends.
