MASON CITY - John A. Fassbinder, 93, died Friday (October 11, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams, Mason City, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with military graveside honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

John A. Fassbinder was born on Aug. 24, 1909, in Charles City, the son of John J. and Lotie L. (Kapple, sic should be Kepple) Fassbinder. He received his education in the Charles City High School. While in high school he was a member of the National Honor Society. He also attended and graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of science degree in civil engeering and was a member of the Beta Kapp Epsilon Society, Tao Beta Pi National Engineering Society and the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

He was united in marriage to Thelma A. Blinkman on Sept. 9, 1941, in Algona. She preceded him in death in 1963. After their marriage, John was inducted into the U.S. Army on Feb. 2, 1941, and served in the transportation corps during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a captain on June 25, 1946. After his honorable discharge, John came back to the North Iowa area and worked as a highway engineer for the Iowa State Highway Commission until his retirement in 1974.

He was a member ofthe St. Vincent DePaul Society.
