August 05, 2016Dixie Lee Berger, 79, of Rockwell, IA died Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the Rockwell Nursing Home.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4-7 pm on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at the Zeidler Park in Rockwell. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date. [Rock Falls Cemetery]
Dixie was born on January 16, 1937 in Mason City, IA to Leslie and L. Maxine (Hutzell) Dunton. She was raised on a farm north of Mason City. Dixie attended and graduated from Mason City Schools and Mason City Junior College. On June 16, 1957 she was united in marriage to Fred “Bud” Berger. To their union, four children were born. The family resided in Dougherty and Rockwell.
Dixie being raised on a farm wasn't afraid of hard work or operating the tractor but the majority of you will remember her working at the Stop and Shop for twenty years. As a young girl Dixie was very active in 4-H as her parents were 4-H Leaders. She followed their footsteps becoming ad 4-H Leader also for many years for the Dougherty Helping Hands.
Dixie loved to read and passed this passion on to her three daughters and daughter-in-law. She enjoyed horseback riding and she and Bud spent many nights dancing at the Surf Ballroom. Together they enjoyed snowmobiling, golfing, traveling and camping with friends. Many card parties over the years and Saturday nights at the Rockwell Legion with friends made for many wonderful memories.
Friends were important to Dixie, but her family came first. Her greatest joy was attending her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's sporting events and she also enjoyed sports on TV especially little league tournaments.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 59 years, Bud Berger of Rockwell; children: Deb (Greg) Jones of Rockwell, Tami (Ron) Dougherty of Dougherty, Kris (John) Murphy of Mason City and Bob (Sheila) Berger of Lake Mills; grandchildren: Brent Jones, Brad Jones, Bryon (Elicia) Jones, Lucas Winfrey, Tanner (Kelsie) Winfrey, Trevor (Ashley) Winfrey, Colton (Shyanne) Winfrey, Jace (Sadie) Winfrey, Ryan Dougherty, Aaron Dougherty, Jared (Stephanie) Finer, Jennie (Andrew) Knudtson, Jordynn (Tony) Finer and Bennett Berger; great-grandchildren: Casey (Sabrina) Gacke, Lexi, Caden, Addi, Olivia, Brooks, Holden, and Cooper Jones, Teegan, Haizen, Aizley, Trysen, Cecil, Slayder, and Quinn Winfrey.
She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother David.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Dixie L. Berger Memorial Fund in care of the family.
