June 07, 1995MASON CITY -- Donald R. Dorenkamp, 63, of 319 1/2 S. Delaware Ave., died Monday (June 5, 1995) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City. A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, Thornton, with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer and the Rev. Vic Groh officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton. There will be no visitation. Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Donald R. Dorenkamp was born on Jan. 30, 1932 in Thornton, Iowa, the son of Jacob Dorenkamp and Elsie (nee) Knoll Dorenkamp. He attended school in Thornton and graduated with the class of 1949. Following graduation he worked at the Thornton Locker until attending the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for two years. He worked for Deckers Packing House in Mason City for 10 years until moving to Torrence, Calif. where he worked for the United States Postal Service for 13 years.
In 1979 he moved to Clear Lake, where he held various jobs until 1985 when he started Donald's Coins in Mason City, which he operated until retiring. In his spare time he enjoyed playing golf.
He is survived by four sisters, Marian "Sally" Peck of Bountiful, Utah, Beverly Harmon of Nampa, Idaho, Shirley Cockram of Sheffield, and Janice Vert of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Richard Dorenkamp of Thornton, and Daryl "Butch" Dorenkamp of St. Louis, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
