On May 8, 1976, he married Barbara J. Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. Over the years, he worked many jobs, but drove semi for 25 years and very much enjoyed it. He loved his CB handle name of “too tall,” and had acquaintances all over the country.
John was a great auto mechanic as well. He enjoyed collecting cars, playing guitar and spending time with family. The heart of his family was his children, grandchildren, and his sisters with whom he was very close to all of them.
John had a very good heart and would give his time and skills to anyone, even if he had just met them. John had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He had an infectious laugh, especially when watching Red Green.
John is survived by four children: Chad C. Carlson and wife Kim, of Beloit, Wisconsin, Jeremy L. Carlson, of Central City, Iowa, Lisa J. Smith and husband Nathan of Granger, Iowa, Curtis J. DeWall of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Amber, Trey, Monica, Courtney, Lilly, Samantha, and Mackenzie; three sisters: Nancy Fisher and husband Stephen of Hanlontown, Iowa, Jeanne DeWall of Williamsburg, Iowa, and Koni Hayes and husband Doug of Brighton, Colorado.
