October 15, 1996MASON CITY -- Mary A. Cahalan, 74, of Mason City, died Sunday (Oct. 13, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.
Visitation will begin after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton-Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E.
In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to Hospice of North Iowa or Newman High School.
Mary was born on Aug. 16, 1922, the daughter of Louis and Stella (Schaefer) Brown in Portsmouth, Ohio. Upon graduating from high school, she attended St. Teresa College in Winona, Minn. She later graduated from there and was very proud of that fact.
On Feb. 19, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to J. Paul Cahalan.
After being married, the couple moved to the Cartersville and Mason City areas where they farmed and raised their family.
Mary loved her family and was very interested in all the activities that they were in.
She also enjoyed reading and doing some hand crafts.
Mary volunteered many hours at North Iowa Mercy Health Center.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rose-Leo Circle, the Bath Homemakers and the Owen Center Club.
Mary is survived by one daughter, Pauline Cahalan of Cedar Hill, Texas; four sons, John and his wife, Dianne of Rockwell; Tom of Bryan, Texas; David and his wife, Kathy, of Clearwater, Fla., and Dan and his wife, Kristi, of Lolo, Mont.; one sister, Ann (Brown) Hesselton of Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, the Rev. F.L. Brown C.S.C. of Notre Dame, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Bill, Maria, Michelle, Tim, Shayne, Keeli, Ian, Mari and Conor Cahalan; and one great-grandson, Adam Cahalan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. Paul.; and one infant son, Martin.
