Lucille L. Balek was born Feb. 4, 1918, second daughter of Charles and Madge (Barr) Snipps in Mason City. She attended Holy Family Schools, graduating in 1935. Lucille in her early years loved to go fishing, hunting and being outdoors, traveling West with her father. She tried very hard to be the “son” he didn’t have. She later held various jobs, one being at Merkles Department Store. On June 8, 1940, she was united in marriage to Merrill Charles Balek at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

Lucille delighted in her family, always supportive and proud of each of her children. “How many?” If you would ask, she would say, “three and half dozen” her eyes twinkling, “three girls and a half dozen boys.”

Lucille loved to knit and especially crochet and made many baby clothes for her children. She had a wonderful voice and music was a must, whether it was the piano or guitar she was playing.

A woman of very strong faith, she was a member of Catholic Daughters. She played her guitar and sang at Masses and led a Bible sharing group until recently.

She is survived by her nine children, David (special friend Kathy Thompson), of Mason City, Lynn (Patricia), of Mason City, Larry (Sue), of Mason City, Terry (Mary), of Mason City, Mary-Margaret (LeRoy) Ries, of Mason City, Sr. Michelle, OSF, of Dubuque, Martin, of Clear Lake, Jerry (Natalie), of Newton, Lorraine (Dennis) Beeson, of CA; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; two nephews, Chuck (Joyce) Accurso, of TX, and Richard (Marge) Accurso, of TN.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister; and two grandsons, Daniel Beeson in infancy and Jay Balek.
