MASON CITY - Maria N. Bakritges, 91, of 324 Second St. N.E., died Friday (June 21, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation was held on Monday at the church.

Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church.

Maria was born July 17, 1910, in Eretria, Evia Greece, the daughter of Andrew and Zaharoula (Filaos) Sideris. Her family moved to the United States in 1926.

Maria married Nicholas Bakritges Jan. 19, 1930, in Mason City. The two of them owned and operated N & M Bar and Grill for many years.

Maria was an active member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Philoptochos, Daughters of Penelope and the VFW Auxiliary.

Maria is survived by her son, Dr. Chris Bakris and his wife, Elaine, of Grand Blanc, Mich.; a grandson, Dr. Nicholas Bakris of Sterling Heights, Mich.; a granddaughter, Marlo George and her husband, Dr. John, of Macomb, Mich.; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Christian George; a cousin, Ekaterine Karatzas of Mason City; a niece and godchild, Mary Ann Karatzas of Mason City; a niece, Georgia Giannakakis and her husband, Nikolaos, of Pleasant Prairie, Wis.; a nephew, Antonios Pattas and his wife, Maria, of Mason City; a great-nephew, James Pattas of Minneapolis, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews and godchildren.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Nicholas, in 1986; and a sister, Helen Potiriades.
