August 17, 1995Former Mason City resident George W. Atkinson, 82, died Tuesday (Aug. 15, 1995) in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
He was born Feb. 22, 1913, to Lloyd Atkinson and Lillian (nee) Laraway Atkinson and graduated from Mason City High School in 1930.
He married Laura Tank on May 31, 1937, in Mason City. She died June 6, 1984.
On July 9, 1986, he married Pauline Newton in Vancouver.
Since that time he had lived in Vancouver and Mesa, Ariz. He was a longtime employee of the Armour Packing Plant in Mason City where he was an industrial engineer.
He was a member of First Christian Church in Mason City where he was an elder for many years. He also was active in SCORE and the Masonic Lodge while living in Mason City.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Atkinson; two daughters, Susan Prescher of Red Wing, Minn., and Carolyn (Mrs. Bill) Mueller of Hannibal, Mo.; and four grandchildren. Survivors also include a stepdaughter, Colleen (Mrs. Rob) Hirschfield of Victoria, B.C., Canada; a step-son, David Newton of Darien, Conn.; and three stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, a son-in-law, and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 23, 1995) at the First Christian Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Boostrom officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to First Christian Church are preferred.
