Wednesday, December 04, 2002MASON CITY -- Ethel M. Burtis, 88, of Mason City, died Friday (Nov. 29, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.
Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the Ethel M. Burtis Memorial Fund.
Ethel was born June 13, 1914, in Mason City, a daughter of Harrison and Iva Jane (Carman) Hedgecock. She was united in marriage to Daryle M. Smith on April 3, 1932, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.
Ethel worked as a manager of the lunch counter at Woolworth's fountain and at the Medical Arts Pharmacy, both in Mason City.
After Daryle's death, she was united in marriage to Adolph Quamme at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. After his death, she was united in marriage to Lyle Burtis at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.
Ethel enjoyed cooking, crocheting, and watching TV. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Ethel is survived by one son, George M. Smith and his wife, Ardyce, of Alamo, Texas; one daughter, Darylene J. Wise of Mason City; six grandchildren and their spouses, Tina and Steven Gabel, Jason and Lori Wise, Deborah Wike, Margaret and Jim Smith, Sandra Smith and Brian Weise, and George Smith II (Chip); 15 great-grandchildren, Calista Cox, Stephanie, Jeff, Michael, and Jacie Wise, Zacharey and Noah Gabel, Sam, Andrew, and Lucas Wike, Alicia and Webster Smith, Rachelle Weise, and Angel and Heather Smith; eight great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Iva Jean Stone and Irene Olson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her three husbands, four brothers, two sisters, one son-in-law, James L. Wise; and two grandsons, Michael Joseph Smith and Troy Daryle Wise.
