MASON CITY - Bernard J. Buckland, 71, of 380 S. Yorktown Pike #10, died Wednesday (July 25, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given in his name to Hospice of North Iowa, American Heart Association, or Wesley United Methodist Church.

Bernard J. Buckland was born on Nov. 30, 1929 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Bernard J. and Marie L. (Russell) Buckland. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1947.

In 1947 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country until 1966. While in the Navy he was united in marriage to Darlene Cline on June 30, 1950 in Key West, Fla. To this union two children were born.

From 1966 to 1991 he taught at North Iowa Area Community College and furthered his education receiving his B.S. and M.S. from Iowa State University. In 1987 he was recognized statewide with a Teacher of the Year Award for "Outstanding Classroom Teaching and Leadership".

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he served as a lay leader and lay speaker. He was also involved with Boy Scouts, Little League, Mended Hearts, Epsilon Pi Tau, American Legion, and the VFW where he was a post commander.

To many he was also known as "Cy the Clown". He enjoyed entertaining the community as a clown. He brightened the days of many at area care centers and MacNider Art Museum.

His cheerful smile and caring ways will be missed by many including his wife, Darlene Buckland, of Mason City; mother, Marie Buckland of Mason City; daughter, Deb Fangman, of Maple Grove, Minn.; son, B.J. Buckland III and wife, Chris, of Minnetonka, Minn.; three grandchildren, Dan, Will, and Stephanie Buckland, of Minnetonka, Minn.; two brothers, Russell L. Buckland and wife, Liz, of West Des Moines, and Gene Buckland and wife, Pat, of Pontiac, Ill.; three sisters, Bonnie Marker and husband, Ralph, of Mason City, Elsie Hampton and husband, Paul, of Pharr, Texas, and Joan Sutcliff and husband, Richard, of Horseshoe Bend, Ark; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard J. Buckland; stepfather, Joe Buckland; grandfather, Elmer Russell; grandchildren, Amy and Jessica Fangman; and son-in-law, Michael Fangman.
