Roger Hartley Blewett, 86, passed away Thurday at Ball Memorial Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born in Thornton, Iowa, the son on Hartley and Hazel (Hartfelder) Blewett.

Roger served in the Army Air Corps in WWII as a B-29 bomber pilot in the 20th Air Force, based in Saipan. He was involved in 10 raids on the Japanese mainland. The last mission occurred only a few hours after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, and their B-29's made a wide circle around that ciry viewing the damage.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University where he became a member of Pi Tau Sigma, the Mechanical Engineering Honorary fraternity. While at Purdue he met Gloria, his wife of 59 years. Mr. Blewett was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana. He worked at Warner Gear Division of Borg Warner in Muncie, for over 33 years and retired in 1984 as Manager of Plant Engineering.

Mr. Blewett was a member of High Street United Methodist Church for over 60 years. He served as Sunday School Superintendent and on the church board. He was charter member of the Delaware Kiwanis Club, maintaining his membership for over 50 years.

For 24 years, Roger and his wife, Gloria, divided their time between their homes in Muncie and Riverwoods Plantation in Estero, Florida, where he enjoyed Bridge, bocce ball and touranment horseshoes. In Muncie his favorite pastime was playing Bridge. He was a member of several local Bridge groups.

Survivors include his daughter, Ann Briggs (husband-Phil), Carrollton, Texas; three grandchildren, Laura Lumetta (husband-Bert), Portage, Michigan, Jack Beabout, Charleston, South Carolina and Jim Beabout, Evansville; eight great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Evelyn Coulter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gloria, and one brother, Warner Blewett.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel, with Pastor Charlotte B. Overmyer officiating. Entombment will follow in Elm Ridge Mausoleum with military honors provided by Veterans of Delaware County Honor Guard.

Family and friends may call Sunday at the mortuary from 2-6 p.m. or one hour prior to service time on Monday.
